Figures published by Essex Police show that 1,047 people were arrested for suspected drug driving during the first five months of 2026, compared with 470 arrests for suspected drink driving.
A further enforcement operation reported on 24 July resulted in 15 drug-driving arrests and one drink-driving arrest.
This picture widely mirrors the growing trend throughout England and Wales of more drivers testing positive for having drugs in their system than alcohol.
An arrest does not establish guilt. Drug-driving cases can involve complex questions about the reliability of the analysis, the procedure followed by the police and, where medication has been prescribed, the statutory medical defence.
